Troubled Wisconsin youth prison faces staff vacancies

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- New figures show nearly 30 job vacancies among employees who guard residents and work most closely with them at the state's youth prison in northern Wisconsin.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports almost one in five jobs remain vacant at Lincoln Hills School for Boys and Copper Lake School for Girls. The institutions share a campus 30 miles north of Wausau.

The youth prisons are under a sweeping state and federal investigation into allegations of abuse by staffers.

Officials say they are hiring more workers. In the meantime, officials are handling the shortage in part by paying for hotel, meal and travel costs for officers who were recently hired to work at other Wisconsin prisons.

However, union officials say the remaining workers at Lincoln Hills are routinely working 16-hour shifts.
