Pointers take doubleheader against Pioneers

The UW-Stevens Point baseball team took on WIAC rival UW-Platteville today in a doubleheader, winning both games at home, 9-2 and 3-2.

In game 1, the Pointers took a commanding lead in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to take a 9-1 lead over the Pioneers. Clint Rose, Ben Gerber, Cody Hanke, and Turner Doornink each had RBIs, contributing to the sixth-inning rally.

On the mound, winning pitcher Mark Kowalke pitched seven innings for the Pointer, striking out five and allowing six hits. Drew Spaeth pitched the final two innings to close out the game.

In game 2, a solo home run in the third inning by Hanke would be the difference maker, giving the Pointers a 1-run lead, which they would hold until the game's final out.

Kody McHugh got the win in relief for the Pointers, pitching 2.2 innings with three strikeouts. Andrew Holzli pitched the final 1.2 innings to pick up the save. Holzli would close out the ninth with three strikeouts on nine pitches.

The Pointers (13-13, 5-5) and Pioneers (13-14, 1-9) will square off in another doubleheader at University Field tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
