ANTIGO (WAOW) - Parents of the teenager seriously wounded by a gunman at the Antigo High School prom say their son is doing well and they asked for people to pray for the family of the slain shooter.
The 18-year-old underwent a long surgery and will recover with time and effort, the parents said in a statement Monday, asking that their names not be used.
Authorities say 18-year-old Jakob E. Wagner shot and injured two prom-goers outside the school with a high-powered rifle before police killed him late Saturday night. Police were in the school parking lot because of the prom and heard Wagner's first shots before rushing to confront him.
The seriously injured teen was shot in the leg.
The injured teen's parents thanked police for saving their son's life and many others on such a traumatic night.
"We have always believed that God is good and has a plan even in the midst of tragedy," the parents wrote. "We are so thankful for his girlfriend and two friends on the scene who acted so bravely and calm."
The family asked people to pray for Wagner's family.
"As much as we are struggling through this event, we cannot imagine the grief they are experiencing at this time. We want everyone to know that we believe and trust in the eternal God," the parents said.
