Officer fired several shots to stop Wisconsin prom gunman
ANTIGO, Wis. (AP) -
A police officer fired several shots at a gunman who opened fire on students outside a prom at a northern Wisconsin school.
According to court records, Patrolman Andy Hopfensperger was checking cars in the Antigo High School parking lot Saturday night when 18-year-old Jakob Wagner shot and wounded two people as they left the dance. The records say Hopfensperger shot Wagner multiple times to stop the attack.
Wagner was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead early Sunday.
USA Today Network-Wisconsin reports (http://spjour.nl/1WnMcwS) that Hopfensperger is a three-year veteran of the Antigo Police Department. He is on paid administrative leave, which is routine for officers involved in shootings.
