Central Wisconsin schools prepare for upcoming prom after Antigo shooting

Several Langlade County high schools have not celebrated prom yet.

Elcho High School and White Lake High School will hold the big dance April 30.

Coming a week after the Antigo shooting, the schools are partnering with the Langlade County Sheriff's Department to ensure safety during the events.

"We were able to come up with a plan for some additional support from the county that we haven't needed in the past," said White Lake Principal Glenda Boldig. "It's better to take extra precautions and not need them then to need them and not have them in place."

In the past, a chaperone was enough for White Lake High School, but now a deputy will be patrolling.

"In light of the recent circumstances in Antigo, obviously the administrators, parents in those smaller communities are concerned, and righfully so," said Langlade County Sheriff Bill Greening.

Around 25 miles away from Antigo, White Lake Principal Glenda Boldig said things have felt different at the school.

"Apprehension I would say from the students," said Boldig. "There's a lot of concern, they're familiar with a lot of the students from the Antigo district, so when we came back yesterday it was somber."

Boldig said they'll also be locking the doors at prom this year at 8:30 p.m.

"We've always had unlimited access one door unlocked," said Boldig. "This year we're also locking that entrance."

Officers and school officials said the ultimate goal is safety.
