Antigo community deals with national attention following prom night shooting

Central Wisconsin is in the media spotlight this week.

The prom shooting in Antigo that left two students wounded and the gunman dead gained national attention.

This story has topped headlines reaching far wider than the city of about 8,400 people.

“People from other towns were posting about it and praying for us,” said Will Minish, an Antigo High School student.

The city's mayor, a lifelong Antigo resident, and former Antigo police chief says this is the largest national news he's ever seen come out of his community.

“I believe the big story here is what didn't happen, the response,” said Antigo Mayor Bill Brandt. “One part luck and nine parts training to have the officer happen to be right there at exactly the right time.”

All of the attention isn't going unnoticed.

“Seeing everybody who was just reporting, it was something new but it was also kind of crazy,” said Minish.
