US serviceman killed in combat by ISIS forces in northern Iraq

(ABC) -

ISIS forces killed a U.S. serviceman in northern Iraq, a defense official said today.

The U.S. defense official confirmed that around 9:30 a.m. local time enemy forces penetrated the Peshmerga front lines in Irbil. The serviceman was killed by direct fire. He was conducting his duties in an advise-and-assist capacity.

The ISIS attack was repelled by the multiple air strikes called in to support the coalition and ISIS forces.

No other casualties have been reported.

This is the third U.S. combat-hostile fire death in Iraq since U.S. forces returned in June 2014. But there have been other non-hostile deaths in Iraq and in the region associated with the anti-ISIS mission.

This is a breaking news story. Check back for updates.
