Police probe possible abduction, escape by 10-year-old girl
GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities in western Michigan are trying to determine if a 10-year-girl was abducted by a stranger before escaping.
The Kent County sheriff's office says the girl told investigators she was waiting for a school bus about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday near her home in Gaines Township when she decided to play in a nearby creek.
The girl said a man wearing a mask forced her into a white pickup truck and drove around for about an hour before she was able to escape the vehicle and run home. Her mother called police shortly before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The sheriff's office is calling the incident "a suspicious situation."
Investigators are reviewing surveillance cameras in the area.
Earlier reports listed the girl's age as 9 and that the incident occurred in Cutlerville.
