Wisconsin Senate leader calls for uniting behind Trump
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin state Senate's top Republican is calling for the party to coalesce around Donald Trump.
Trump defeated rival Ted Cruz in Indiana's primary on Tuesday, prompting the Texas senator to quit the race and giving Trump a clear path to the GOP nomination.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Wednesday that it's time for Wisconsin Republicans to put aside misgivings about the bombastic billionaire businessman and unite behind him.
Fitzgerald said Trump will drive high conservative turnout in November that will help Republicans down-ballot and he can't believe anyone would think something will happen to stop Trump's drive to the nomination.
He said the state party should ask the Cruz campaign to release delegates committed to him. A party spokesman didn't immediately respond to an email.
