Athlete of the Week: Matt Tuman, Wausau East

The game of golf is no walk in the park, it's a tough game, but for the reigning Wisconsin Valley Conference champion Matt Tuman... that's the fun of it.

"I like it just because it's a challenge," Tuman said. "Every shot presents a new opportunity to do something cool."

And the Wausau East junior has done some pretty of cool stuff since finding his swing.

"I would say 7th or 8th grade I started taking lessons and I started playing in bigger event... and I realized I was actually not bad," Tuman said with a modest smile.

Named Central Wisconsin's prep golfer of the year in 2015, Tuman's handicap is a mere half stroke.

"I would say that my strength is my short game," Tuman said. "And if I'm hitting the ball straight my distance will help me too."

"He works hard at his game," Wausau East golf coach Buck Welsh said of his star pupil. "He's very knowledgeable about it. And he just competes and keeps trying out there all the time."

Tuman's goals this golf season include repeating as conference champion, qualifying for state and performing well there. In the meantime, he intends on perfecting his game on the green throughout the spring, ala PGA pro Jordan Spieth

"I'd like to be like Spieth," Tuman said. "Because he has the best short game in the world, and that's obviously how you get it done"
