Athlete of the Week: Karter Underwood, Marathon

The Marathon baseball team presently sits in first place in the Marawood South Conference, and much of its success can be credited to one of its talented seniors who's paying it forward.

"I grew up with a bunch of really nice guys, some really, really good leaders," Marathon's Karter Underwood said. "I just try to pride myself in being one of those guys..."

If the Red Raiders win the Marawood South this season, it will be their tenth-consecutive conference title; a benchmark they could very well reach with the help of Underwood's play and coach-like leadership.

"He's pitched a lot of significant innings and he's had a lot of key hits a long the way," Marathon head baseball coach Steve Warren said. "He's experienced a lot of pressure situations and going through that... he's able to help the younger players stay focused, not panic if things don't go right."

"I like to be vocal out there," Underwood said. "Just keeping our guys in the game and always knowing what the situation is."

More than a leader in the clubhouse, Underwood is a leader on the stat sheet as well. He currently fronts the team in both hits and average and is one of the squad's most reliable arms on the mound.

"You can't let anybody beat you out there," Underwood said. "You just have to have the mindset that you're the guy and you can beat any pitcher out there."
Despite how well he's performing, Underwood doesn't spend too much time reveling in his success.

"Baseball's a game a failure," Underwood said. "Sometimes you got to accept that... And you got to know that there's always a place you can improve."
