Merrill woman found competent in attempted murder case

MERRILL (WAOW) - A judge ruled Monday that a Merrill woman accused of putting a plastic bag over a 78-year-old man's head, trying to kill him, is competent to stand trial, according to online Lincoln County court records.

The decision involving Stacey Hansen, 45, followed a doctor's report regarding his examination of her.

Hansen is charged with four felonies, including attempted first-degree intentional homicide and aggravated battery, in the Oct. 29 incident in Merrill.

Prosecutors contend Hansen kneeled on the elderly man's upper body and pinched his nose while she held the bag over his head.

When officers arrived, the man did not have a pulse but he was revived and taken to a hospital with bruises, according to a criminal complaint.

Investigators said Hansen knew the man and they lived in the same building in Merrill.

Hansen has pleaded not guilty and her three-day trial is set to start July 25.
