June 2016 Jefferson Award Winner: Evelyn Baumann

WAUSAU (WAOW) - Evelyn Baumann of Wausau has volunteered thousands of hours in knitting prayer shawls for the dying and sick.

For her selfless efforts, she won June's Jefferson Award for volunteering.

"It's been a good life. I am 90 years old, but it feels like I can still do something," Baumann said.

That's for sure.

She clips coupons, hunting for bargains, before driving herself to area craft and fabric stores to buy the skeins of yarn she uses to crochet prayer shawls, which she donates to Aspirus.

"The prayer shawls and the crocheted and knitted items the hospital volunteers make  provide comfort to many people," said Yolanda Voigt, the hospital's director of volunteers. "We provide them to the hospice house and in our chapels, and we might even give one to a patient when they first arrive. It is a way to provide comfort."

The hospital says Baumann has volunteered 17,000 hours in making the shawls.

Baumann started volunteering when she was 75 -- after the death of her husband.

Most days, sitting in her living room, she crochets for about three hours.

First, Baumann turns on her iPad so she can listen to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh while she stitches.

By her count. she's completed nearly 600 prayer shawls and she has no plans to stop.

"It makes you feel good to know you are doing something. Even if it is making prayer shawls," the Jefferson Award winner said.
