SPASH, Thorp win state softball titles

MADISON (WAOW) -- SPASH won its ninth state softball championship in program history on Saturday, toppling Watertown 16-4 in the Division 1 state championship game.

The Panthers trailed 3-1 after an inning, facing their first deficit of the tournament. However, SPASH roared back, outscoring the Goslings 15-1 the rest of the way to get the win.

Halle Pavelski's third-inning home run spurred the rout for the Panthers, whose nine state titles are a WIAA record. Aubrey Drohner starred at the plate and on the mound, going 3-4 with 3 RBI and pitching all seven innings for SPASH.

Thorp clinched its first state title in program history, also in convicing fashion. The Cardinals defeated Southwestern 9-2 on Saturday morning.

Lizzy Schimke threw seven innings of one-run ball for the Cardinals.
