Shooting sparks Christianity argument between lawmakers

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- State Rep. Jesse Kremer is calling a Democratic rival a "loon" for suggesting on Twitter that conservative Christian beliefs drives violent acts against gay people.

Rep. Mandela Barnes, a Milwaukee Democrat, tweeted Sunday in the wake of the Orlando nightclub shooting that churches, Congress and statehouses house "terroristic enablers" and asking how many people conservative Christian ideology has driven to attack gay and transgender people.

Kremer, who sponsored a failed bill this past session that would have forced people to use bathrooms corresponding to the genitals they were born with, issued a statement Tuesday calling Barnes an "absolute loon of a `leader"' and accusing him of politicizing a horrific event.

Barnes is challenging Sen. Lena Taylor, another Milwaukee Democrat, in August's primary. A Barnes aide had no immediate comment.
