Many noticing lack of mosquitoes in central Wisconsin this year

Here in Wisconsin many have a love hate relationship with summer.

While enjoying time outside is great, dealing with mosquitoes is less enjoyable.

However, many have noticed less buzzing this year.

“Surprisingly enough they haven't been too bad yet,” said Faith Robinson of Merrill.

These circumstances are not what Wisconsinites are used to.

“It's very different because usually they're everywhere,” said Tarissa Liss of Wausau.

Newsline 9 checked in with PJ Liesch the director of the UW-Madison Insect Diagnostic Lab.

”Within a given year the mosquito levels in the state can vary quite a bit and it often boils down to the rainfall and precipitation that we've gotten,” Liesch said.

He explained, the recent wet weather won't mean mosquitoes right away.

”When we get rainstorms like that there's often a lag period of maybe about two weeks or so and then all of a sudden we often notice this big boom of mosquitoes following that,” Liesch said.
