Obama, Saudi official discuss economic reforms, security

President Barack Obama is praising Saudi Arabia's efforts to diversify its economy by making it less reliant on oil revenues.

Obama met in the Oval Office Friday with Saudi Arabia's Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the son of King Salman. The White House says Obama commended him for pursuing economic reforms.

White House spokeswoman Jennifer Friedman says Obama thanked Saudi Arabia for its contribution to the coalition fighting the Islamic State group. She says the leaders spoke about the need for a political transition in Syria away from President Bashar Assad.

Friedman says the leaders voiced support for a U.N-backed unity government in Libya, and discussed Iran's destabilizing activities in the Mideast. She says the deputy crown prince also expressed support for the global climate deal struck in Paris.
