Arrest at Madison mall protested

Posted:
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -

Madison's police chief, several City Council members and others have met with the family of a woman whose arrest outside a mall has generated claims of unfair treatment.

About 30 demonstrators gathered outside the Public Safety Building Tuesday night to protest how officers handled the arrest at East Towne Mall. Police say Genele Laird displayed a knife, threatened to kill mall security staff and resisted arrest.

A video of the arrest shows Madison police officers struggling with Laird as they took her to the ground to handcuff her Tuesday. Police say she bit an officer. The video shows an officer using a stun gun to subdue her after using his knee and closed fist to get her to comply with orders.

Two officers were treated for injuries at the hospital.
