Medical marijuana and treatment of Alzheimer's

(CNN) -- A medical marijuana miracle?

A recent study suggests marijuana may be an effective treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

According to the study, THC  the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, stimulates the removal of toxic plaque in the brain.

The study also found that THC  blocks inflammation, which damages brain neurons.

The findings support a 2014 review of existing research on marijuana, that showed THC  helps decrease symptoms associated with Alzheimer's.

Unfortunately, there are still no effective therapies for stopping the disease.

The study was published in the Journal Aging and Mechanisms of Disease.
