Several dozen shot dead in weekend protests across Ethiopia

Posted:

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) -- An opposition leader and Amnesty International say several dozen people were shot dead in weekend protests across Ethiopia as frustration with the government grows.

Amnesty International says at least 67 people were killed in the Oromia region when security forces fired on protesters, and another at least 30 were shot and killed in the northern city of Bahir Dar.

An opposition politician, Mulatu Gemechu, tells The Associated Press that more than 70 people were killed across Oromia.

The government again blocked the internet over the weekend, saying "anti-peace elements" based abroad and online activists were to blame for the violence.
