A local Mohican Indian tribe has taken its first step in building a strip mall in Shawano.
The Stockbridge-Munsee tribe held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday morning.
They're building the $1.3 million retail center on Highway 22, just off Highway 29.
Bayland Buildings is the general contractor for the project.
Tribe leaders say this will be the only strip mall near a major highway between Wittenberg and Green Bay.
"This is something that we anticipate will satisfy not only the Stockbridge-Munsee in terms of economic development," said Shannon Holsey, tribe president. "But also the community at large."
Holsey says the mall should be completed by the spring.
