Downtown Grocery is making its return to its original building that was ruined by a fire almost one year ago.
Construction crews got to work on Tuesday to renovate the interior.
A fire broke out in the grocery store on September 29th, 2015, and the business temporarily relocated to the Wausau Center Mall.
The owners said the concept will remain the same, but a new second floor loft for dining is in the works.
"We had to really rethink the entire operation, just because of the nature of the building construction process, and that's why it's really taken 9 months to come up with a practical solution to the building because the soot and smoke is so extensive inside the building," Kevin Korpela said, who owns the store with his wife, Megan.
Wausau mayor Robert Mielke stopped by to check out the construction.
The Korpelas have not yet set a date for when Downtown Grocery will reopen on Third Street.
