WAUSAU (WAOW) - A Wausau woman has made it her mission to end domestic violence. For her efforts, Keri Anne Connaughty is the Jefferson Award winner for October.
Connaughty's sister Kira Steger Trevino was killed by her husband in Minnesota in 2013.
"I spent my childhood protecting my sister from the very thing that took her life," Connaughty said. "I moved out when I was 14 and the support of teachers and my church and family and friends it showed me what love was and made me who I am today and not to be part of that cycle of abuse."
Connaughty says she has struggled with the loss of her sister and finds solace in helping others who may be in the same situation.
She volunteers at The Women's Community Inc. in Wausau, helping raise money and meeting with survivors of domestic abuse and violence.
"Sometimes, listening is all you need to do. Your time and your ears are really the best gift you can give somebody," Connaughty said.
