Athlete of the Week: Alec Hafferman - Edgar

"Growing up here in Edgar, football is everything to us," Edgar senior Alec Hafferman said.

But after dislocating his elbow mid-season, Hafferman was told his football season was over... or it was supposed to be, but grit kicked in.

"When the doctor told me I couldn't come back, I made it point to myself that every setback is a set up for a comeback," Hafferman said.

According to Edgar football coach Jerry Sinz, his star player simply refused to accept his circumstances.

"He told the doctor... 'Alright, if that's your diagnosis, I don't want to see you anymore,'" Sinz recounts. "So then he checked in with the guy from the Packers and got a little better diagnosis."

After meeting with Packers team physician Patrick McKenzie, Hafferman was fitted with a brace and from there immediately began rehabbing.

"I did a lot of research," Hafferman said. "Just stretching [my elbow] out everyday, praying and do all I could."

In the meantime, the Edgar Wildcats scuffled, going 2-2 without him. Lucky for them, his return came at just the right time: the playoffs. He missed over a month of action, but was back for Edgar's Level 1 playoff game versus Assumption.

"After the first play, I knew that I was ready," Hafferman said. "Just the confidence that I had in my team and they had in me just sort of rose when I got out there"

And it's been a triumphant comeback for the Wildcats All Conference Player. Between levels 1 and 2, the running back has recorded 7 touchdowns and 200-plus yards of offense, even snagging an interception on defense. All of that came in limited work.

"Just day by day, I just knew that I'd get back," Hafferman said. "Because I knew I had a mission, and my mission was to get back on this football field and to play with my brothers and make whatever we can happen"

"Obviously, we were kind of an average team for a while," Sinz said. "But then getting him back, and then getting into Division 7.... We're feeling pretty position about our chances."

Next up for Edgar: Level 3 at Loyal.
