Nov. 2016 Jefferson Award Winner: Marcia McDonald

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - A Stevens Point woman found her passion early in life by volunteering at a nursing home.

"I started that right in the halls here when I was in senior high school. I realized that being with geriatric seniors was what I wanted to do with my life," Marica McDonald said.

She is administrator of the Portage County Health Care Center. Her devotion to seniors has inspired others to make similar career choices.

"Her enthusiasm, her energy. I watched the way she interacted with seniors and decided that is what I want to do," said Melissa Simonis, the activities director at the center.

McDonalds' devotion to improving the lives of seniors carries beyond the work day.

Through her professional connections, she volunteered to bring the Ageless Aviation dream flights to Stevens Point.

For the past six years, Ageless Aviation has taken seniors and veterans for rides in a 1940s Boeing Stearman airplane.

"These folks have sacrificed so much for us. To be able to tell them thank you and to see the joy on their faces is just unbelievable," founder Darryl Fisher said.

For McDonald, the long hours of volunteering and coordinating the flights is all worth it when she sees the reactions of the seniors.

"I encourage everyone to take a little still time, wherever they are in their life, to find out what equates happiness in you and passionately follow your dream," McDonald said.
