Marathon Co. Crime Stoppers: Stolen dog

EDGAR, Wis. (WAOW) -

Marathon County Crime Stoppers is investigating a possible stolen dog in the Town of Rietbrock near Edgar.

It unfolded Dec. 30 when a neighbor reported that a woman in her 30s stopped and asked questions about a dog named Chloe being outside in the subzero cold, Marathon County Sheriff's Deputy Dale Ruechel said.

"The neighbor assured her that the dog was well cared for and then it turns up missing," he said.

Some time later, the owners went on social media to alert people that their pet was gone.

The woman may have believed she was rescuing the dog from the bitter cold temperatures but she actually committed a crime by stealing it, Ruechel said.

"If  you are concerned about an animal's welfare, the correct response is to call the sheriff's department or humane society and they will check on it," he said. "But to take the animal.. that is not okay."
