UPDATE: Wausau man found dead in home after hours long police presence

A 35-year-old Wausau man was found dead inside a home on the city's northeast side Wednesday evening.

Police said they believe it was a suicide but are still investigating. Wausau Police Chief Ben Bliven said the department had been working to make contact with a man over the last 24 hours who lived on Augusta Avenue and North 8th Street.

"Our goal was to check on his welfare because he had made suicidal comments in the past 24 hours," said Bliven.

Around noon on Wednesday, Bliven said police attempted to make a traffic stop as the man left the house. He said there was a short pursuit before the man fled back inside the home. Bliven said the man had made threats to shoot officers who came to his home. Shortly after he went back inside, they said they heard a gunshot from inside the home.

"They decided to set up a perimeter and we called in our SWAT team for assistance," said Bliven.

For roughly six hours police, SWAT and fire officials from multiple agencies staged outside the home attempting to make contact with the man inside, not sure at the time if he was still alive.

"Our goal is obviously to bring a situation to a resolution that includes everybody being alive, so every decision we make is based on that end goal," said Bliven.

When the SWAT team went inside the home they found the man dead.

"It's been a very long, arduous day for a lot of people in our community," said Bliven. "Obviously the ending of the incident is not what we hoped for, it's heartbreaking for the family involved."

Bliven said no other details are being released at this time, including whether there were other people inside the home. He said the Marathon County Sheriff's Department has taken over the investigation. He said that's because it's considered an officer involved death since police were in pursuit of the man when he died.

Wausau Police are asking people to avoid the area of 8th Street and Augusta Avenue on the eastside due to an "active situation," according to the department's Facebook page.

A Newsline 9 reporter on scene said there are about a dozen cop cars and the SWAT team is there as well.

No word yet on what is going on.
