March 14th is Pi Day-- 3.14.

It is also the 3rd Annual Dress for STEM. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.

Female meteorologists all over the country are wearing purple to raise awareness about female participation in these male dominated fields.

According to the American Meteorological Society, just 29 percent of broadcast meteorologists are female.

"That has grown over the last couple of years, which is a good sign," said Newsline 9 meteorologist, Samantha Kuffel.

However, she said it is discouraging that only eight percent of chief broadcast meteorologists are female.

Kuffel wants young girls and women to feel empowered to pursue careers in the STEM fields.

"It's 2018. You can do whatever you want. You can be that scientist as long as you keep working hard, you'll get there," Kuffel said.
