Wausau RiverWolves face No.1 North Iowa in first round of playoffs

After 47 games, the NA3HL Wausau RiverWolves finished their inaugural season with an 11-35 record – good enough to punch their ticket to the 2018 Fraser Cup Playoffs.

Now, it's a new year. Everyone starts with zeros – zero points, zero wins, zero losses.

“Everybody puts their equipment on the same way,” RiverWolves head coach Tim Brownell said. “It just comes down to who executes the X's and O's; whoever makes the least amount of mistakes is going to win.”

The RiverWolves will face top seeded North Iowa in a best-of-three series, starting Friday at North Iowa Arena. The RiverWolves played the Bulls six times in the regular season, coming up winless in all matchups.

“Everyone in tier three hockey expects North Iowa to win. So in my mind all the pressure is on them to perform, so if we just go out there, play the game we want, believe in each other, and the guys in the locker room believe, there's no doubt in my mind we can play with them," Brownell said.

It hasn't been easy for the RiverWolves, who struggled early in the first three months of the season, but they gathered enough points to make a run in the playoffs.

“We are an underdog and have nothing to lose,” Brownell said. “We're just going out there calm, cool and collected.”

Puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
