Mining ordinance moves forward in Marathon County

A mining ordinance moves forward in Marathon County.

It comes as a law making it easier to mine and takes effect in July.

The Marathon County Land Conservation and Zoning Committee approved the ordinance this afternoon.

Two key elements make it up: a $15,000 deposit for each well that, potentially, could be impacted by mining and the ability for the county to revisit any agreement with a mine company.

Aquila Resources says they are interested in a deposit near the town of Easton, but they want to make sure everyone is on board.

"If we don't get this mine right or any mine that we propose we won't be able to mine again in the future. We know everything is on the line when we start mining. We need to be protective of the environment and the community we're in," said Chantae Lessard, an Aquila Resources Representative.

The ordinance now heads to the full board for approval.

They could take it up as soon as next week.
