Wausau schools tack on extra half day thanks to spring storm

A spring storm has caused problems for schools throughout central Wisconsin.

Tuesday's snow storm marks the second snow day for the Wausau School District this school year.

District leaders said they go to great lengths to determine when they have to call off schools, according to the communications director of Wausau School District Amy Arlen.

"We consult with our school bus drivers and our yellow bus providers for students," Arlen said. "We will also talk with law enforcement, neighboring school districts and gather as much information as we can and decide when is the best time to call off school should we need to call off school."

Arlen said the Wausau School District waited for an appropriate moment to make their announcement for Tuesday's school closing.

"We decided to call off last night, instead of this morning so if we know the weather condition will worsen we don't want to hold off on that decision," Arlen said.

The school district develops a calendar in case of snow related closings, which includes one make up day built in.

The make up day is placed for students to be able to complete a full school year.

"Sometimes that is something that we have to do and that is a precedent that we have had in the school district," Arlen said.

Last year the Wausau School District had three snow days for which they had to make up one extra day at the end of the year.

According to Arlen, Tuesday's snow storm will cause students to make up an extra half day in June.
