Rural Portage Co. community meeting over violent sex offender placement

A public meeting was held in the Town of Alban for the third sexually violent person (SVP) placement in the same home.

Gregory Loomis will be placed in the home on or before April 15. He will be the third SVP that is placed in that home, one was removed several months back for violating probation conditions.

Residents have continually voiced concerns with SVP's placed in that home because it's across from a building commonly used as a community center. An SVP has to meet a specific set of criteria including having a mental disability.

According to officials, Loomis sexually assaulted a male and female child while babysitting. He was found guilty of first degree sexual assault twice. Loomis is not from Portage County.

Governor Scott Walker recently signed a bill to prevent SVP's from being placed in counties outside of their home county, however there is still uncertainty whether it will impact this placement.

Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas told WSAU radio that a motion has been sent to a Milwaukee judge in hopes of stopping the placement.

"We're hoping that Milwaukee County will intervene in regards to stopping this so they can reevaluate placement," said Lukas.

Residents said they're holding on to hope something gets done in time.
