Write-in, 25-year-old among underdog winners in Spring Election

In the Northwoods, a write-in candidate and a millennial were the heroes of the Election Day story.

In Merrill, 25-year-old Derek Woellner ousted two-term incumbent Bill Bialecki.

"I could never convince myself logically it was going to happen," Woellner said. "But I felt it in my gut."

In Rhinelander, write-in Chris Frederickson generated enough buzz with 781 votes to beat the only name on the ballot.

A paperwork issue had kept Frederickson off the ticket officially.

"I take the obstacles as they come and move forward, my philosophy in life is meet and exceed next," he said. "You take a task, you meet it, you exceed the expectation of others and move onto the next."

In Merrill, Woellner believes his age ultimately played in his favor.

"As I got out and started to more people, I realized my age was actually a huge advantage," he said.

His first order of business is upping the city's recreational opportunities.

"I really want to push disc golf in Merrill," he said. "I think it could become the disc golf capital of the state, maybe the country."
