Portage Co. first responders participate in active shooter training

Multiple law enforcement agencies in Portage County took part in a "mass trauma exercise" at Stevens Point Municipal Airport Wednesday.

The training session simulated an active shooter situation at the airport.

Police departments from Plover and Stevens point, the Portage County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, U-W Stevens Point campus police and Spirit Ambulance Service took part.

Actors were even brought in to make the exercise as authentic as possible. It's as close as these first responders can get to the real thing.

"The big main benefit is getting all of these multi-jurisdictions together, that will arrive at a real scene, and get them to work together when they normally don't. And it's very interesting to see how they come together. And it's been very positive," said Portage County Sheriff's Office Deputy Robert Wanta.

"It's nothing new for Portage County. We've been doing it for a while. We've been refining how we do things and we're gonna learn from those things," said Stevens Point Fire Department Captain JB Moody.

This is the fourth year the departments have trained.

250 people participated in the four day session.
