Former local star Payton Nelson making an immediate impact for UWSP

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -

For the past two years, Payton Nelson was a first-team, all-state talent at Wausau West. Now, the former Warrior is a key cog in Jeremy Jirschele's lineup at UW-Stevens Point.

The freshman has started every game in center field this season and finds himself as the team's lead off hitter more often than not.

"He's just a competitor," his head coach, Jeremy Jirschele said. "He takes every at bat and competes and is the toughest out as possible. He gets great reads out in the outfield as well."

"He goes up there and handles his business the right way."

And Nelson has responded well since being thrust into a big role. He has reached base safely in 11 of 12 games and is hitting .360 during his six-game hitting streak.

"I go into the games knowing that I'm prepared ready to face the different level of pitching," Nelson said.

"When I'm up to bat I feel like I can get a base hit every single time."
