Central Wisconsin theater productions underway

Spring theater productions are underway, but preparations began months ago. Two of those central Wisconsin shows premiere this weekend.

The UW-Marathon County production is called Spring Awakening. Based on a very dark late 19th century German play, UW-MC Theater Professor and Director Sarah Rudolph warned that the musical is intended for mature audiences only.

"It's serious theater, it really is," said Rudolph. "But it also has some of the same appeal that musicals in the traditional sense do. It has some wonderful music, it does have dance, it has some spectacle. And it's not all really dark. Some of it is quite funny."

Spring Awakening is the fifth musical the college department has put on in the relatively new Center for Civic Engagement. It features a cast and crew of around 40 people.

"I think people will be stunned. People who haven't seen productions here will be stunned by the level of talent that we have," said Rudolph. "It's mostly UW-MC students and a very talented cast."

Meanwhile, Merrill High School's production of Beauty and the Beast premiered Thursday evening. According to co-director Nancy Arndorfer, the show was a big undertaking.

"Well we have a very energetic team and we decided to either go big or not do it at all," said Arndorfer. "And the kids got after us and said, 'can we do something big?' And I said 'yes, if we do some fund raising.' And the community was behind us, so I think that helped us a lot."

While not as dark as Spring Awakening, the co-director believes adults and children alike will enjoy Beauty and the Beast.

"To see that that's coming from a community of less than 10,000 people really says something about the talent we have here in Merrill, Wisconsin," said Arndorfer.
