Governor Walker signs laws to fight opioid abuse

Governor Walker will be at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay on Monday, signing a pair of bills aimed at fighting opioid abuse.

Representative Nygren has pushed hard over the years to fight opioid abuse because of his daughter Cassie's battle with addiction.

He says they strike a necessary balance between law enforcement, justice with treatment and recovery.

Two new attorney positions will be created at the Wisconsin Department of Justice to help district attorneys prosecute drug crimes. One will be at the Department of Justice's Appleton field office and other at the Wausau office.

The bills also help start grant programs for police to fight drug trafficking and juvenile and family treatment courts. Doctors and other health care workers will also be continually trained on best practices for prescribing medication that might be addictive.

Plus, more doctors will be able to prescribe medication that helps people quit using opioids.

Nygren's fight against opioid abuse has been inspired by his daughter's battle with addiction. Cassie Nygren is charged in the overdose death of a woman and her unborn child.
