Portage County Crime Stoppers: Rash of bar break-ins

TOWN OF AMHERST (WAOW) - Is a serial burglar targeting taverns in Portage County?

Four bars have been ripped off since January - the most recent being Bootleggers in the Town of Amherst on April 1, according to Sheriff Mike Lukas.

The thief stole $1,275 from the tavern's cash register and video gaming machines and also ran away with candy bars, the sheriff said.

"This is the third break-in during the past month and the losses and damages are in the thousands of dollars," Lukas said. "Someone broke into Saddle Up Saloon in the Town of Carson in early March. A few weeks later deputies were called to Pop-A-Top Bar and Grill for an attempted break-in. Add to that the burglary at the Long Branch Tavern in Almond back in January. There have been four break-ins this year in the county."

Investigators say the the thief or thieves always target cash registers and video gambling machines. Bar owners are advised to remove cash from their business each night and upgrade security systems.
