Sara's Law signed into action at Marathon Co. Courthouse

Legislation sparked by the March 22, 2017 shooting rampage was signed into law Wednesday.

Sara's Law is named after Sara Quirt Sann, who was the divorce attorney for the shooter's estranged wife. It creates harsher punishments for anyone who threatens family lawyers who deal with emotional cases, as Quirt Sann often did.

"Just a win on so many levels," said Sara's husband Scott. "For us as a family for helping us in the healing process, but also a win for the Wausau community."

In June 2017, the Wausau Metro Strong group reached out to Rep. Pat Snyder (R-Schofield) and Sen. Jerry Petrowski (R-Marshfield) about drafting legislation. From there, the bill was born.

Governor Scott Walker dedicated his legal pen to Sara's Law - and Sara's Law only - Wednesday.

"We thought it was important specifically to do this one bill on this on site on this one day," said Walker.

Sara's husband said the ceremony was something his wife would be proud of.

"I think what Sara would be most proud of today, is the change came without yelling, without fighting, without slander," Scott said. "Basically without negativity we see too often today."

Sara's Law is the first of its kind that protects this specific group of lawyers.
