UWSP wins 10th straight, 7-0 in WIAC for first time since 2003

Behind a gutsy performance from senior pitcher Cole Erickson and some timely hitting, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team is off to its best start in WIAC play since 2003. Thursday afternoon the Pointers knocked off No. 16 UW-Oshkosh, 5-3, on the road at Alumni Stadium.

"You know good teams find ways to win late and I thought we did a great job of that today," head coach Jeremy Jirschele said.

Despite being outhit 12-6 by the Titans, the Pointers manufactured runs in four different innings and led wire-to-wire. The win marks the 10th straight for the team as it sits at 15-4 overall.

"We don't back down from anybody," Erickson said. "Everybody's in it to win it and we all play together as a team."

One day after winning a 14-inning thriller at UW-Stout, UWSP leaned on its senior ace to eat up a majority of the workload and he delivered. Erickson, the two-time all-WIAC first team selection, toughed out 7.1 innings and struck out five to pick up the win. He's 4-1 on the season with a 2.29 ERA.

"Cole is our number one guy," junior catcher Kyle Mrozinski said. "He always goes (deep into games). He's our guy."

"He's just a great leader on the mound," Jirschele said. "He didn't have his best stuff today but he was able to get outs when we needed to and make the plays behind him too."

UWSP has the weekend off before continuing the series against UWO on Tuesday and Wednesday in Oshkosh.
