A babysitter has been charged after a dog attacked and killed a 13-month-old girl in her care at her southeast Missouri home.

Erica Jordan, of Cape Girardeau, was charged last week with second-degree involuntary manslaughter in the death of Loxli Chavez. She’s free on bond. Court records don’t list an attorney to speak on behalf of the 33-year-old and she doesn’t have a listed phone number.

The Southeast Missourian reports that a pit bull-mix named Smokey belonging to Jordan’s brother attacked Loxli March 9. Loxli died at a hospital.

Police Sgt. Darren Estes wrote in a probable cause statement that Jordan said the dog had also bitten her son but that she thought he had calmed down after being neutered.

Jordan reportedly said she would let the dog loose, but sometimes put the dog in her son's room because he was "not good with kids."

Just before the attack, Smokey had reportedly been drinking water a few feet from Loxli. Jordan said she suddenly “heard screaming and crying” and saw “blood everywhere,” according to a probable-cause statement.

Jordan told police she tried to pull the dog away but he "just kept going for the baby."

KFVS reported Loxli died from two puncture wounds to the skull. Police say the dog has been impounded and will be euthanized.

Loxli's mother told police she didn't know the dog had previously attacked another child and had been assured the dog wouldn't pose a risk to her children.

If convicted, Jordan faces up to four years in prison.
