WIAC cancels postseason baseball tournament

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) has canceled its conference tournament due to weather and travel concerns.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be played May 11-13. That weekend will now be used to make up games from this upcoming weekend, which have all been canceled due to weather.

The tournament is typically used to determine the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. However, the conference does not have an AQ this season. WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner said that played a large role in the decision to cancel the tournament.

"Since the conference doesn’t have an AQ this year, it made more sense to give all of our teams more opportunities to play their conference games," he said in a statement. "Rescheduling these games on top of the current games that already need to be rescheduled, would have resulted in a significant amount of missed class time and additional travel costs.”

Conference teams likely would have had to make up games during the week, which would have forced students to miss class time.

The conference games that were originally scheduled to be played April 14-15 will now take place May 11-12. Those games included:  UW-Stout at UW-Platteville; UW-Whitewater at UW-La Crosse; and Illinois Institute of Technology at UW-Oshkosh.

UW-Stevens Point is off this weekend. The Pointers' next scheduled game is Tuesday at UW-Oshkosh.
