Wisconsin Rapids' Tia Dorshorst commits to D1 Western Illinois

A gymnastics turned track star is headed for collegiate competition at the highest level next year.

Tia Dorshorst, a Wisconsin Rapids senior, signed her letter of intent today to run track for the Western Illinois Leathernecks.

She said a number of things went into the decision, but ultimately, "it felt like home."

Dorshorst signed her letter this morning surrounded by family, friends and fellow athletes.

She said she always wanted to compete in gymnastics at the highest levels, but has changed her plans over the past couple of years.

"It feels absolutely incredible. I feel like God opened a different door and different opportunity for me. Yeah, it wasn't gymnastics, what I originally planned, but I'm still very blessed and thankful for the opportunity he's given me," she said.

She set personal bests in the 50 and 60 meter dashes and the pole vault earlier this season before tearing her ACL last month.

Dorshorst will get that ACL repaired next week, and said recovery will take six months to a year.
