Wisconsin Rapids man shot in the head in Minnesota


CARLTON COUNTY, MN - A man is in custody following a shooting in Carlton County Friday night. 

The Carlton County Sheriff's Office says a 911 call reporting a shooting on Kari Road in the Progress Township came in just after 11:30 p.m. 

The caller was identified as Michael Montano, 53, who lives at the home.

Montano reported that his son,  James Montano, 32,  of Bayfield, Wisconsin, had shot Michael’s brother, Andrew Gokee, 57,  of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin.

Michael Montano reported that he heard another gunshot outside the residence and that James Montano had run away from the residence.

When police arrived at the home they found Gokee with a gunshot wound to the head. Gokee was transported by ambulance to St Luke’s hospital in Duluth where he is currently being treated. His condition is unknown at this time.

A second male victim, Hudson Gauther, 38,  of Stevens Point, Wisconsin was also located at the residence. Gauther had a superficial gunshot injury and was treated by EMS at the residence but denied transport to a hospital.

Assistance to help local James Montano was requested and received from the Cloquet Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol Troopers and Air Wing Unit, Fond Du Lac Conservation, Duluth Police Department K9 Unit, and the St Louis County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Team. 

An extensive air search was conducted by the Minnesota State Patrol Air Wing Unit and the suspect was located in a wooded area.

James Montano was taken into custody by members of the St Louis County Tactical Response Team. James was located with a gunshot wound to his chest and transported by ambulance to Essentia St Mary’s Hospital in Duluth where he is currently receiving treatment.

James Montano is in custody pending formal charges by Carlton County Attorney’s Office on Monday.

The Fond Du Lac Tribal Police Department and Carlton County Deputies initially responded to the call along with ambulances from the Cromwell Fire Department and Cloquet Area Fire District. The Minnesota BCA Mobile Crime Processing Team and Investigative Agents have been contacted to assist with this ongoing investigation.
