DNR reminds people about fishing regulations

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants to remind people about the rules before heading out on the water.

The states fishing opener kicks off on Saturday, and DNR officials are expecting a large turnout this year.

"We have over fifteen thousand lakes, thousands of miles of rivers and streams so fishing brings a lot of revenue to the state," said warden Josh Litvinoff.

Officials want to remind fishers they need to have a valid fishing license or they will get fined a minimum of $100. Boatowners' registrations also need to be updated.

The DNR also advises fishers to store safety equipment inside the boat, in case of an emergency.

"The water levels have started to recede, but they are still higher than normal," Litvinoff said. He added it's always a good idea to let someone know where you're going to be fishing.
