Residents react to deadly Portage Co. shooting

Neighbors are speaking out after a deadly shooting in a rural Portage County community.

Officials said it happened in the town of Almond Saturday evening. After a long night, the crime scene was cleared off by Sunday morning.

According to police, a man was shot and killed in front of his mobile home on 4th Avenue and 4th Street.

Neighbors are now trying to grasp how this could happen in their town.

"If you hear gun shots in the neighborhood around here it is like normal," said a neighbor who did not want her identity to be disclosed. "You live in the country and it's hunting season so to hear gun shots around here it is pretty normal."

However, the gun shots Saturday evening resulted in the death of her neighbor just a few yards away.

Almond has a total population of less than 500 people, residents are saying acts of violence like this do not happen in their town.

"It's quiet around here, I mean for something like this to go on is mind boggling," the neighbor said. "I mean you can't fathom how this could go on in such a small town."

While police have not identified the victim, family and neighbors said the man killed was a father of two boys.

"I met him a time or two he was a great man," the neighbor said. " He loved his kids more than anything in the world I know that."

The neighbor said she is confident that the small town will pull together in the wake of a tragedy.

"Everyone around here is pretty close knit, everybody knows everybody and I know the community will pull together and take care to do anything they can to help out," the neighbor said.
