Lincoln County deputy crashes car rushing to bar disturbance

MERRILL (WAOW) - The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department says a deputy escaped serious injury when he lost control and crashed his car rushing to a report of a bar disturbance caused by three Illinois teenagers.

The incident at Pankow's Bar northwest of Merrill happened about 9:30 p.m. Friday and multiple deputies were dispatched to the scene of three 18-year-old men causing trouble, Lt. Tim Fischer said Monday. "There was quite a commotion out there. They didn't want to get arrested."

One deputy rushing northbound on state Highway 107 in "emergency fashion" hit the east edge of the road, over corrected, went into the west ditch and stuck a large rock on the passenger side, said Corey Bennett, chief of the Merrill Police Department, which is investigating the crash.

The teens - two from Waconda, Ill., and one from Island Lake, Ill. - were arrested on a variety of charges, including resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, criminal damage to property, operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent and battery to a police officer, Fischer said.

As for the squad car, it got "banged up pretty good," he said, adding dash cam video of the incident had not been retrieved Monday.
