A 5-foot tall statue of the Virgin Mary was stolen from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wausau over the weekend.

Police said it was taken at some point between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

A priest at the church said he was notified the statue was missing at 7:15 a.m. Sunday.  A volunteer was getting things ready for a service at the Church when he noticed it was gone.

"[The church is] very concerned about their property," Lt. Nathan Cihlar of Wausau Police Department said. "It means a lot to them and it's very valuable to them not just in a financial sense."

"We're all open to forgiveness," said Father Aaron Huberfeld. "We're open to conversion of heart, that's the most important thing not only for us but the people who did this."

He lives behind the church and heard some commotion Saturday night but didn't think anything of it.

"At about midnight, I was half asleep but nevertheless heard people coming through here making a lot of noise," he said.

A service was supposed to take place at the statue on Sunday. While they weren't able to complete the initial plan, Father Aaron said church goers still gathered where the statue used to be, and prayed.

Father Aaron said the church does not want to press charges if the statue is returned, they just want it back.

If you have any information about the statue you're asked to call the Wausau Police Department at (715) 261-7800.
