Wausau man charged with OWI after crashing car into a home

A Wausau man faces his third OWI charge after crashing his car into a home on the corner of Nicolet Street and Stevens Drive early Thursday morning.

According to a criminal complaint, the driver Matthew Hager told an officer a person ran out in front of his car, which forced him to swerve and lose control of the vehicle. The complaint also stated Hager had a blood alcohol content of 0.113.

Hager and a man inside the home had minor injuries, but both are expected to be okay, according to Lt. Bill Taylor of the Wausau Police Department.

"One occupant inside the residence who was sitting on the couch when the vehicle hit the house and knocked him off the couch," he said.

The state originally planned to charge him with more serious charges, but as of Thursday evening, prosecutors said they only have enough evidence to charge him with the OWI. The prosecuting attorney said he expects more charges to be filed within a week.

Lieutenant Taylor said speed and alcohol seem to be a factor in the crash.
