UPDATE: Kids witness stabbing on Taylor County road

MEDFORD (WAOW) - One man was in jail Friday and another remained in the hospital with at least two stab wounds following a fight that some children witnessed on a county road near Medford, authorities said.

The incident involving Stormy Webber, 34, of Medford and Derek Novak, 25, of Phillips happened about 4:40 p.m. Thursday on County Highway Q just off state Highway 64.

There was an argument that got physical when Novak pulled a knife and stabbed Webber, said Larry Woebbeking, chief deputy of the Taylor County Sheriff's Department.

Children were in the cars of both men at the time as well as two women, he said.

Novak was jailed on a $200,000 cash bond as police are recommending he be charged with attempted reckless homicide, carrying a concealed weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, according to the clerk of court's office.

No charges were filed Friday but Novak is to return to court June 19, a clerk said.

Novak is the father of a child he had with a woman now in a relationship with Webber and the parents had been having child custody issues for months, according to an arrest report.

The fight started with Webber "yelling at Derek telling him to quit following them" as Novak sought to drop off his child he had with Webber's girlfriend, the arrest report said.

Novak's wife told investigators Webber grabbed her husband by the throat with both hands and pushed him into a car as Novak showed the knife, the report said. They ended up on the ground with Webber on top of Novak, punching him in the face, before Webber got stabbed two or three times in the back.

"Derek was adamant the entire incident was self-defense," the report said. "Derek said he wishes he didn't have a knife but he did and can't change it."

Webber remained hospitalized at Aspirus Hospital in Medford with "significant serious injuries but we have been informed he is doing well," Woebbeking said.
